Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has raised the number of people missing after the Aug. 26 floods to 6,150. The revised total is 971 higher than the previous figure of 5,179. Officials said updated records from affected districts drove the increase after verification. Authorities have also recovered 1,403 bodies since the disaster struck. The floods and debris flows caused extensive damage across northern Nepal, particularly near the border with China.
Evacuations expand as rainfall intensifies
The evacuation total increased sharply as authorities widened precautionary measures across affected districts. By 7:50 p.m. on September 13, officials had moved 31,564 people away from dangerous areas. The number exceeded 55,000 by the following evening as flooding and geological risks continued. The Hainan Provincial Disaster Prevention, Reduction and Relief Committee Office coordinated response measures during the emergency.
Emergency crews also worked to restore access and essential services in communities hit by flooding and landslides. Roads, electricity and communications were disrupted in parts of Baoting and Wuzhishan during the most intense rainfall. Rescue teams were deployed to affected locations, while utility crews carried out repairs as conditions allowed. Authorities also monitored reservoirs, rivers and areas exposed to flash flooding.
Authorities set the official chicken meat price at Rs461 per kilogram after cutting the notified rate by Rs22. Retail sellers still charged between Rs520 and Rs570 per kilogram. Potatoes carried an official price of Rs27 to Rs30, yet market rates reached Rs50 to Rs70. Tomatoes were listed between Rs130 and Rs180 but sold for Rs250 to Rs300. Onions also exceeded their notified ceiling, with retail prices reaching Rs200 to Rs220.
The UAE president traveled with a senior delegation covering foreign affairs, trade, industry, defence, national security and advanced technology. It includes Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Industry and Advanced Technology Minister Sultan Al Jaber. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Bishkek during the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit. The August 31 meeting covered political ties, trade, defence, energy, space, mobility and contacts between people. Modi and Putin also discussed regional conflicts and cooperation through major multilateral forums. The talks marked their first in-person meeting of 2026 and continued a series of high-level exchanges between India and Russia.
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Cairo for an official visit as Egypt and China marked 70 years of diplomatic relations. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi welcomed Xi at Cairo International Airport on Tuesday. First Lady Entissar El-Sisi also attended the reception alongside Xi’s wife, Peng Liyuan. The visit is Xi’s first to Egypt in 10 years. It comes as both governments review a bilateral relationship that spans political, economic and development cooperation.
The report says almost 19% of the world’s children now live in conflict zones. That compares with about 10% during the 1990s. By the end of 2024, conflict and violence had displaced 48.8 million children worldwide. The total was nearly triple the roughly 17 million recorded in 2010. It includes refugee and asylum-seeking children, along with millions uprooted within their own countries by conflict and violence.
Climate hazards are adding another layer of risk for children around the world. Nearly half of all children, or 1.1 billion, face at least three overlapping climate hazards. Almost every child faces at least one such hazard, according to UNICEF’s 2026 climate risk assessment. More than 4 million children face as many as six overlapping threats. The hazards include drought, extreme heat, heatwaves, floods, fires, tropical storms and sand and dust storms.
Economic cooperation formed a major part of the talks. Bilateral trade reached $1.3 billion in 2025, up 33%, according to the Uzbek government. Both countries set a target of raising annual trade to $5 billion by 2030. The number of joint ventures has increased sevenfold in recent years. India and Uzbekistan also have 14 direct flights each week, while four Indian universities currently operate in Uzbekistan. The leaders called for broader industrial and business links.
